What equipment do I need to start?
As a beginner, you may have many questions about scuba diving equipment.
Do you need to purchase all the gear right away?
How much will it cost to get started?
When you begin your Ocean Diver training, it’s recommended to invest in some basic gear consisting of a mask and fins. These are essential items that will form the foundation of your diving kit.
Moving to Open Water
As you progress to open-water dives, being in the UK one of the most important pieces of equipment you will need is a drysuit.
Full Equipment Ownership
Most divers wait until they are fully qualified before buying a complete set of gear. Even then, some prefer to continue hiring equipment, especially when traveling internationally, as it can simplify logistics.
Cost Breakdown
Scuba diving gear varies widely in price, but here’s an estimate of what to expect:
- Mask and fins: Starting at around £50 for a basic set
- Drysuits: Begin at £500 and can exceed £2,000 for top-end models – many initially rent this
- Full kit: Equipping a diver can soon ad up but many rent or look for second hand equipment. Full equipment can costs from £2,000 upwards.
However, well-maintained gear can last many years, making it a worthwhile long-term investment - By joining a club, you can initially borrow and then rent club equipment, making it much cheaper to dive with us and test different equipment before buying.
